Supporting new engineering and physics library at Cardiff University
Renishaw, one of the world’s leading engineering technology companies, recently attended the official opening of Cardiff University’s newly redesigned Trevithick Library performed by television personality and Honorary Fellow, Carol Vorderman (pictured right with sponsors). The new state-of-the art learning facility includes the ‘Renishaw Room’, a group study facility that was made possible through a five-year sponsorship agreement signed last year between Renishaw and the University.
Enhanced learning for future engineers and physicists
The Trevithick Library, which caters for students and researchers from the Schools of Engineering, Physics & Astronomy, Computer Science and the Manufacturing Engineering Centre, is a flagship design for future library developments at Cardiff University. In her opening address, Carol Vorderman noted the contribution of the sponsors to the project and described the new study rooms as “fabulous”.
The library has been completely redesigned to enhance learning experiences for students and arose from a review of the University’s Library Service which aimed to provide world-leading research facilities, inspiring learning environments and expert support for all library users. Key elements of the new design include the group study rooms, research lounge, wireless networks and a modern ‘computer bar’.
Speaking about the Trevithick Library project, Gareth Hankins (pictured far right), Renishaw’s Manufacturing Director and a Cardiff University graduate said, “As a company at the cutting edge of engineering technology we were delighted to be invited to participate in this modern facility which offers the best possible learning opportunities for students in the fields of manufacturing, engineering and physics. The Renishaw Room is already in constant use and will help expose our name and technologies to the next generation of high-class graduate engineers and physicists.”
In addition to Renishaw the project also attracted sponsorship from organisations including The Wolfson Foundation, Corus, Mott MacDonald, ARUP and the South Wales Institute of Engineering. Speakers at the opening on the 25th March also included Professor Malcolm Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor - Estates, and University Librarian Janet Peters.
